WHAT KIND OF GAME FISH ARE FOUND IN MAUI WATERS?
We target four types of game fish here in Hawaii: Marlin (including Pacific Blue, striped and spearfish/shortbilled marlin), Ahi (yellowfin tuna), Ono (wahoo), and Mahi Mahi (dolphin fish). These can range in size from a small, 8 pound juvenile mahi mahi to an 800 lb. blue marlin.... or maybe bigger! Occasionally, we pick up various species of Snapper, Jacks, and other incidental catches.
WHAT TECHNIQUES TO YOU USE?
Most of our fish here in Hawaii are caught high speed trolling (8-9 knots). Depending on the fishing conditions, we also fish with live and dead bait (Or whatever it takes that day to make 'em bite!)
DO WE NEED A FISHING LICENSE?
Short answer: NO, you do not need a license to go sportfishing on Maui. Captain and crew are required to have a commercial fishing licence. You, as passengers, are covered under us.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE FISH WE CATCH?
Part of your crews' incentive to work hard is the potential to make money from fish sales. We don't want to take that incentive away. However we always make sure to take care of our passengers first. For those passengers staying in a home or condominium with cooking facilities, we're more than happy to cut up enough fish for one or two awesome fish dinners. On shareboats, we'll cut up a portion of the day's catch for all passengers, regardless of who catches the fish. We've never had a complaint about our fish policy. Again, we take care of YOU first.
IS THIS A GOOD ACTIVITY FOR KIDS?
You need to have a lot of patience for sportfishing. Sometimes you hook up right off the bat and the day is one long-filled adventure, and other times you don't hook up at all. Patience is important, and many kids just don't have it. Just keep it in mind, every kid is different. For children under 10, we recommend a private charter.
HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD WE BOOK?
That depends a lot on when you're coming. Over Christmas, New Years, Spring Break, and around Halloween, when the Lahaina Jackpot tournament is underway, we often get booked out months in advance. Basically, you want to make your reservation as early as possible. You don't have to PAY in advance (unless you want to of course!) you simply need to reserve the space.
HOW DO WE RESERVE A CHARTER?
If you want to reserve space online, go to our contact page, and fill out the necessary information. We'll then phone you (or you can phone us) for a credit card number to hold the date and time. Your card is not charged until the day of the charter, and you can pay with a different card or cash if you prefer on that day.
Should you need to cancel your charter, the policy is as follows: Share boat trip, please contact us outside 36 hours from the time of departure. Private charters, please contact us 72 hours in advance. Cancelling within these times will result in our charging the full amount to the card number you gave us when you made the reservation.
WHAT ABOUT BOTTOM FISHING / CASTING?
We do not offer bottom fishing or spin casting on shareboat charters.
If you're interested in a private, custom charter, contact us and we'll see if we can arrange something special.
As you can see from the two pictures here, we like to do this ourselves on our days off! On the left, holding the "Uku" is my girlfriend, Jody. Hooking up on the right, is my buddy Steve.
...Who am I? I'm Kevin Your Captain. I have 20 years experience fishing the waters off Maui and look forward to having you join me aboard the Rascal!
